Margaret was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years after we married. We were both in our thirties, full of plans. The diagnosis did not stop us — we adapted. But over the years, as the condition progressed, adapting became harder.
These days, I help Margaret with almost everything. Getting dressed, getting into her wheelchair, preparing meals that she can manage. I have become quite good at it, if I say so myself. But there are moments, usually late at night, when the tiredness catches up with me.
What has made the biggest difference is connecting with other carers through Carers in Luton. The monthly coffee mornings give me something to look forward to. I have also attended the financial advice sessions, which helped us access benefits we did not know we were entitled to. We are not alone in this, and knowing that matters more than anything.
