I started caring for my mum when I was fourteen. She has fibromyalgia and some days she cannot get out of bed. At first, I did not really understand what was happening — I just knew she needed help, and I was the one who could give it.
Mornings are the hardest part. I get up early to make sure she has her medication and something to eat before I head to school. My teachers did not know for a long time because I did not want anyone to treat me differently. When I finally told my form tutor, she connected me with Carers in Luton.
Since then, things have changed. I have met other young carers who understand what my life is like. The support group gives me a place where I do not have to explain myself. I have learned that asking for help is not a weakness — it is how you keep going.
