When Brian had his stroke, our whole world changed overnight. One moment we were planning a holiday to Cornwall; the next, I was learning how to manage a feeding tube and communicate with a man who could no longer speak clearly.
The hospital discharge was overwhelming. I was given leaflets and sent home with very little practical support. It was only when a neighbour mentioned Carers in Luton that I realised there were people who could help. The advice team sat with me and helped me apply for a Carer's Assessment, which led to respite care and equipment for our home.
Caring for Brian is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I would not have it any other way. He is still the man I married. With the right support around us, we manage — and on good days, we even laugh together like we always did.
